History

Originally known as the ‘British Council of Shaare Zedek’, Shaare Zedek UK is based in North West London with an office in Manchester.

Shaare Zedek UK was formed in the late 1940s with the sole aim of supporting the Shaare Zedek Medical Centre in Jerusalem. Our board has included, and continues to include, some of the most prominent members of the Anglo-Jewish community.

Our UK supporters convened throughout World War II to raise much-needed funds for the hospital – a time when it lost its main source of income, namely from the Jewish community of Europe. Despite such an overwhelming financial and emotional setback, the hospital extended its care to include the influx of European immigrants. Therefore, the contribution of Shaare Zedek UK became even more vital.

Share Zedek UK continues to support the hospital, enabling it to provide front-line services throughout Jerusalem.
