Shaare Zedek accepts status as Israel’s leading maternity hospital

With the strike of midnight on January 1st, ushering in the calendar year 2011, Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center firmly established itself as Israel’s most active maternity hospital, after recording 13,758 maternity deliveries, with a total of 14,020 babies (including twins, triplets, etc.) in 2010. Until 2011 that status had previously been held by Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba, the only hospital serving a population of 750,000 in the Negev, while Shaare Zedek is one of four hospitals serving the greater Jerusalem area.

Several months ago, a young girl of ten years of age from the Jerusalem area arrived at the Glaubach Department of Pediatric Emergency Medicine after having collapsed while playing sports at school. While she reported that she was already feeling fine by the time she arrived at the hospital, the physicians noticed in her medical history that a similar episode had occurred when the girl was five years old.
